How Important Are Network Marketing Products?

I recently received a call from one of my Watkins downline members. This person got started about a year ago, and has struggled to get anything going with the business. I was working hard on ways to help him, when I looked at numbers and found something that surprised me. This sincere (but mistaken) associate did not understand the importance of believing in the very products that are the foundation of his business. This applies to any network marketing business, not just Watkins. Here is a letter I wrote to him.

Dear (name withheld),

I have been thinking about your situation. You have been working with the co-op and other methods to build your Watkins business. So far, for some reason, you have not had any significant response to your efforts. You recently came to me for help. I am very happy to help you in every way possible, as I really want you to be successful with Watkins.

As you know, Watkins is not like a traditional business. To make this business work, one requirement is that you have to be sold on the products. It is absolutely critical that you believe in the products and use them. While looking at some things, trying to work out ways to help you, I noticed that you have zero personal volume since November 2006. I believe this was your first month in the business. I was surprised to see this.

The products that Watkins manufactures are the heart of our business. We must believe in these products and believe that they offer outstanding value and quality to the consumer. This is why we all need to use the products in our own homes. This is critical, because if we don’t use our own products, how can we expect anyone else to use them?

Nobody is saying you must use a certain amount of product in your home. In my case, I use most of the cleaning line as well as many of the cooking products. I also use some of the nutritional products. This is my choice, because I find these products to be outstanding in value and quality. They work.

Why can’t a person just sell the products and make money, without using them personally? I believe it all boils down to attitude and belief. When we are talking to potential retail customers or new associates, our words and voice carry a level of conviction. Your prospect can sense if you believe in your products, and your business. If you don’t believe in the products enough to purchase even a single one over a ten month period, that demonstrates a lack of belief and conviction in the quality of the products. I promise, this will come out when you talk to others.

(name withheld), I strongly encourage you to use Watkins products in your own home. I am not advising you to do this for personal profit. Here is the bottom line - I do not know, and have never known, a successful Watkins associate who did not use the products in their own home. Period. I want you to be successful with Watkins, and I will tell you or anyone else that using and believing in the products is absolutely essential.

I am finally back after taking some time off from writing and focusing on preparation for the fall sponsoring season. It seems that every year our Watkins business achieves significant growth in the fall months - both in product sales and sponsoring of new associates. There are good reasons for this trend - if you are involved in network marketing or direct sales, this can be a tremendous time to grow your business!

Two things are happening now. First, we are entering the shopping season for Christmas and other holidays that come around between now and January. While it is still very early in the season, people are starting to think about gifts and are looking. With Watkins, we are fortunate to have the Watkins Fall Gift Line, which drives a huge amount of product sales in our group and has for a number of years. In Business, Attitude is Everything

I received this in an email today - one of those forwarded emails from a friend that seem to make the rounds. I like this one, because it speaks of something all home based business people need a healthy dose of - good attitude! Read this, and think of how your business would flourish and grow if your attitude were like John’s.

READ THIS , LET IT REALLY SINK IN - THEN CHOOSE .

John is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, “If I were any better, I would be twins!”

He was a natural motivator.

If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, “I don’t get it!

You can’t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?”

He replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or … You can choose to be in a bad mood.

I choose to be in a good mood.”

Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or…I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.

Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or… I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.

“Yeah, right, it’s not that easy,” I protested.

“Yes, it is,” he said. “Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood.

You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It’s your choice how you live your life.”

I reflected on what he said. Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.

After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back.

I saw him about six months after the accident.

When I asked him how he was, he replied, “If I were any better, I’d be twins…Wanna see my scars?”

I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.

“The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter,” he replied. “Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or…I could choose to die. I chose to live.”

“Weren’t you scared? Did you lose consciousness?” I asked.

He continued, “..the paramedics were great.

They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read ‘he’s a dead man’. I knew I needed to take action.”

“What did you do?” I asked.

“Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me,” said John. ” She asked if I was allergic to anything. ‘Yes, I replied.’ The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, ‘Gravity’.”

Over their laughter, I told them, “I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.”

He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude… I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.

Attitude, after all, is everything

After all today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

Retail Selling or Network Marketing?

From time to time, I have prospects contact me and indicate they have an interest in “selling Watkins”. While I truly appreciate everyone who signs up with me and sells Watkins products, I try to help them understand that we also have a very powerful network marketing compensation plan. I point out the difference between short-term income (retail selling) and long-term residual income (building a group and earning from the efforts of many). New Watkins associates who are seeking a long-term stable income are encouraged to do a small amount of retailing, but to focus on sponsoring.

Following are the key differences between a Watkins retail-only business and a Watkins network marketing business. Note that the same principles apply to any network marketing opportunity offering consumable products that can be sold at a retail price for a profit.

Retail-Only Business: Watkins is special among direct selling companies in that it offers a wide variety of ways to sell products. Some folks like to do flea markets or fairs. Others enjoy doing home parties and demonstrations. Still others stick to catalog sharing among friends and acquaintances. Watkins supports all of these efforts. The problem is, if you depend on retail income to make all or part of your living, what happens if you get sick for an extended period? What if you want to take a two-week vacation? In pure retailing, your income slows down or stops if you are not actively out there soliciting the sales. This is hard.

Network Marketing Business: You build a group of dedicated Watkins associates, and teach each of them how to do the same. The result is (over time, if you put in the effort) a significant residual income that will continue to come in each month, even if you slow down for a while or decide to take some time off. This is the beauty of network marketing and residual income - your efforts today (sponsoring, training, helping others) will pay off now and far into the future. Isn’t this what most of us really want? I think so.

I firmly believe that every Watkins associate (or any network marketer) should build a small retail business. This is just good common sense, and is a service to those who love the product but are not interested in a home based business. My point is, if you want the long-term income that gives you options and helps you be financially free, you need to focus most of your efforts on sponsoring and helping others achieve their dreams.

Building a Home Business - Facing Obstacles

From time to time, network marketers and home based business builders face obstacles and discouragement that can seem overwhelming. Day to day life presents challenges that can cause us to lose focus, and get off track. It can be problems at work, if we still have a regular job. It can be bills that are late, as we worry about how to get caught up. It can be an overwhelming number of obligations that make time for building a business seem to be non-existent. Sometime we face challenges and discouragement for an extended period, as we work through life’s challenges.

How do we maintain focus and momentum in building our businesses, when faced with things like this? It isn’t often easy. I’ve been in this position many times in my business life. I have not always responded well - at times, my business has suffered as I lost focus dealing with other issues. It is VERY easy to neglect doing the right things for building your business when faced with a lot of distractions and issues.

Here is what I have learned, and it has made a big difference to me. Life will throw many challenges at you. Some of these challenges come in the form of hard times (financial and otherwise), others are impediments such as new job responsibilities that require longer hours. What you have to do is remember this:

Obstacles, challenges, and discouragement are tough. It is how you respond to them that determines whether they help or hurt your efforts.

Adversity can make us tougher, more able to face future challenges. Adversity can sharpen our resolve, and polish our skills, IF we respond in a positive way. Certainly, this is not easy to do - it is much easier to just hunker down and wait for things to pass. Don’t do that! Resolve to focus even harder on your business when times are difficult. If you have less time to work on it, find a way to make better use of what time you have. If there are other distractions, do whatever it takes, but find a way to keep moving forward and building. This prepares you to fly through future challenges and discouragement. It is a learning opportunity.

Stay positive, and use adversity to your advantage - this is what makes champions!

No Fear - Calling Network Marketing Prospects

In our Watkins business, we have an online information site that prospective Watkins associates can visit and view information about our business opportunity. We receive leads through this site, and many of them provide a phone number. We encourage our downline associates to call these prospects as soon as possible after they visit our site. However, many Watkins associates find it hard to make that call, and prefer to make contact by email instead.

At one time, that was me. I dreaded making that phone call, even though these were prospects who chose to take a look at Watkins, and who expressed a solid interest. I used to communicate with prospects mostly by email - I was simply afraid to get on the phone. However, that changed almost overnight. There was a moment in time when my fear of making those calls virtually disappeared. I can’t say I wasn’t still a little nervous about it, but I no longer hesitated to call and I started to sponsor more of my prospects.

What happened that made me change? It is the same thing that can happen to you, and can literally change your outlook and your success with your business.

My defining moment came after a very l-o-n-g week at work. I was really tired, frustrated, and knew for sure that I didn’t want to do that forever. It just hit me - I could either make those calls and do everything possible to build my business, or work at that job (or one like it) FOREVER. I wanted freedom. From that moment, I looked forward to making those calls, knowing that each call brought me one step closer to ultimate success with Watkins.

My point - you can overcome any fear of calling or talking to prospects. Just build your dream, get excited enough, build a desire to have a different lifestyle, and want it really bad. When you get serious about your business, and know why you want to make it work, many fears and obstacles will vanish!

The Simplicity of Success in Network Marketing

Network marketing is a very simple business that offers virtually unlimited potential for personal growth and income. Pick a solid opportunity (like Watkins), learn the fundamentals from your successful upline members, and make it happen.

By keeping the business simple, you make it easier for others to duplicate what you’re doing. Duplication is important, because your downline will watch what you do and copy you. If you are doing the right things for success, they will watch and follow your lead. If you do little or nothing, don’t expect them to do much either. Success in Watkins, or any network marketing business, is really as simple as this:

- use your products yourself. Use them because you like them, and they are good. Don’t try to build a business around products you do not believe in.

- tell others about your products. You don’t want to be a salesperson, you don’t need to be. Just tell others in a conversational way about them. Share catalogs or whatever information you have. Sales will follow.

- share the business opportunity. Building a downline is where your long-term residual income is. Retail products for immediate income, build a downline for long-term residual income.

- teach your downline associates the fundamentals. Show them how to do these things, and how to show others the same.

That is really all you have to do - keep it simple, practice proven fundamentals for business growth, and be consistent in what you do!

Top Priorities in Network Marketing

With network marketers, there is much discussion of how available business-building time should be used. Some networkers spend more time preparing and organizing than actually doing anything productive to build their business. With that in mind, here is an example of what I feel is good utilization of your time. I welcome any opinions, pro or con.

Priority #1 in Network Marketing

Contact and train new associates in your group. Call them on the phone, do not rely on email only. This step is crucial, because they need encouragement and direction to get started on a successful note. Do not sponsor and then move to the next prospect right away - take some time with your new associates.

Priority #2 in Network Marketing

Contact your prospects and help them understand your business and how they can benefit from it. Again, I strongly suggest voice communication over email, whenever possible. There is a personal touch to talking with someone that cannot be duplicated by exchanging emails.

Priority #3 in Network Marketing

Support and encourage existing leaders in your group. Help them learn to train their downline, just as you are. Existing leaders are associates you have helped develop by practicing Priority #1 above.

Priority #4 in Network Marketing

Engage in personal development. Use commuting time to listen to practical and motivational material. Keep your attitude up!

Along with these four priorities, there will be time for organizing and planning things. This is something you need to do - just don’t let planning, organizing, and preparing take up all your time to the exclusion of working directly with existing associates and prospects.
