Is Your Home Business a Hobby?

I’m sure you’ve heard it often - “to succeed, you have to treat your home business like a business, not a hobby”. For those in network marketing and direct sales who wish to achieve a significant income and financial independence, nothing could be more true. A business, and the activities that make it work, have to be priorities in your schedule. A hobby is something you do when you have a little extra time, not necessarily something you do each day. A business has activities and tasks that must be done daily, if you are to be successful.

Here are two ways to think about this.

1) If your business were a job, would you likely be promoted, or fired? Don’t take this wrong - many people are in business in order to escape a job they hate, or avoid having to take a job they dislike. Think of your business as a job only in the sense of the effort you put into it. If you put as much effort into your home business as you likely would a job, then your chance of success is much higher. A business with little or no effort put into it is destined to go nowhere. This is just common sense.

2) When people think of you, do they think “oh yes, I know him/her, they sell Watkins products”. Or, whatever your product or service is. If people around you don’t know you are in business, it is a good sign that you aren’t spreading the word and reaching out. Certainly, in this day, you can do almost everything on the Internet in some cases. However, it still pays to let everyone around you know what you are up to. Over time, some of your best contacts will come from this “warm market”.

The bottom line - if you really want to make good money and build a profitable home based business (network marketing, MLM, direct sales, or otherwise) then make sure you treat your business as a business, and not a hobby. Even if you are very busy, and (seriously) only have 5-10 hours a week to put into it, make that time count by doing the right things consistently. It pays off!
