Network Marketing Failure - Reason One

Posted in Watkins Business by Eldon on October 17th, 2006

While network marketing (sometimes called MLM) is one of the most profitable home based businesses you can start, a high percentage of those who start a network marketing business fail to ever make a profit, let alone the full-time income they probably hoped for.

There are a number of reasons for failure in network marketing or MLM. Assuming you have chosen a reputable opportunity with quality products, it boils down to things the new associate or distributor is not doing correctly. These reasons apply to Watkins associates, as well as those involved with other opportunities. This is the first in a series of articles that will discuss some of the reasons network marketers and MLM’ers fail.

The first reason - the new home business owner does not believe in or regularly use the products they represent. This is very important. I have had people join my group in Watkins, and try to build a business without ever buying a single product for their own use. This has never ceased to amaze me, because Watkins offers over 350 quality household and personal care products. There is something from Watkins for everyone. I firmly believe that a new network marketing distributor must use their own products - how else can you have the confidence to tell others what you have?

Would you say to your prospects, “come to my store and buy my products - ignore the fact that I shop with my competitor across the street. My products are great, don’t you believe me?” Of course not!

Use your own products! You must believe in what your company offers, otherwise you are just kidding yourself. In my case, I use a lot of Watkins products in my own home. I can testify to the quality and value I receive. This is very important to my success with Watkins - knowing and using your own products will be important for your business success as well.

Special Note: as I mentioned in an earlier article, a network marketing company’s products are very important. Without good products that people (including the distributors) want, the opportunity will fail even if it has the world’s most fantastic compensation plan. Sometime new network marketers focus entirely on pay plans and pay little attention to the products they sell. Many are taught that the compensation plan is all that matters. This is a big mistake.
