Online Business Opportunity Gurus

I always advise people to be very careful when considering a business opportunity on the Internet that is based around some “guru” figure who claims to have made big money. There is usually the story about how this guru was once dead broke, perhaps having spent years trying different businesses, until they “stumbled” on some big secret that turned things around for them. The “big secret” is often a particular network marketing program, or in some cases an affiliate program or some sort of “plug in and make money” type of site. Often there are promises that this guru will build your business for you. He will give you so much “spillover” that you will not believe it.

So, you sign up and then what? You find that the “spillover”, if it happens at all, is in one leg of your downline and you must build another leg to match before you can make much money. There is nothing at all wrong with the idea of you doing some work yourself before you profit, but all too often that fact is not clearly stated before you sign up. I can’t count the number of people I’ve talked to who joined a program thinking some upline guru was going to make them rich if only they would just join up and commit to a monthly product purchase.

Another thing that often happens - the sales pitch will lead you to believe that you only have to spend a certain number of dollars a month for the program. You are often promised free tools and software to help you build your business. When you get into the training, you start finding lots of recommendations and lots of opportunities to upgrade tools and software that were initially offered free. You learn that what was offered for free is only slightly useful, and often useless if you are serious about building a business online. You hear the pitch “psst….you CAN build your business using the free versions of these tools, but if you are serious you should upgrade”. You find that you must spend much more than what you were led to believe. The truth is, it does take money to effectively promote a business online. It is probably true that you need the full versions of the free tools if you are serious. The problem is when the gurus and promoters aren’t up front about that fact.

So, all I am saying, is be very careful with choosing a business opportunity online - particularly if the business is based around a “guru” or personality and a fancy sales pitch that sounds too good to be true. It usually is.
